DAVID

David saw the figure standing beside the car, and he knew he had to be imagining things.

It had to be the smoke inhalation. It had to be the burns from the fire, sending him fucking delirious.

Or maybe he was dead. Maybe he was dying or dead, and this was one of his final pre-death hallucinations.

But one thing was for sure.

That figure. There were two of them. Double vision? No. No, there were definitely two of them.

Running through the snow.

Running towards the side of one of the cars.

And as he watched them run, he felt his stomach turning even more. A strange feeling. An unfamiliar feeling. Joy? Sadness? A mixture of everything? It was hard to tell.

But there was no denying exactly who he was looking at.

One of the little girls he was looking at.

He knew exactly who she was.

He listened to the flames flickering from the burning cars all around him. He heard more of those flames being unleashed from these people’s flamethrowers. He could hear the infected screaming, too. The burning seemed to be a good method. Usually, it was a good, clean hit to the head that dealt with them best. But the burning definitely seemed to be doing the trick. Maybe something to keep in mind. If he made it out of this mess alive, anyway.

Which was a definite “maybe” right now.

At a push.

But that girl.

Those two girls.

Running over to the side of that car.

Hiding underneath it.

He stood there, and he watched them, and he could barely move. He felt frozen. Completely frozen.

’Cause he knew who they were.

Well. He knew who one of them was.

And the other…

He didn’t know.

But he knew what he needed to do.

He couldn’t overthink it.

There was only one thing he could do.

He needed to get to them, and he needed to help them.

He needed to…

Suddenly, amidst the chaos, he saw something that made him freeze on the spot even more.

A man.

One of those figures carrying their flamethrowers.

Approaching the car that the girls were under.

David saw the man stop right beside it.

He saw them stand there for a few seconds.

And then he saw him start to walk around the car.

He watched. Fists clenched. That sense of protectiveness kicking in.

Was it innate protectiveness?

Or was Sammy right?

Was there more to this?

He watched the man reach the other side of the car.

Then, he watched him suddenly drag the girl out from underneath it.

He saw him standing there. Saw him pointing his flamethrower at the two girls.

And he saw the girl herself.

Her wide eyes.

That innocent expression on her face.

Her.

Undoubtedly her.

He saw the man lift the flamethrower.

He saw the fear in the girl’s eyes.

He saw everything happening in slow motion.

And even if he was putting himself in danger, even if he was exposing his position to the others… he knew what he had to do.

There was only one thing he could do.

Invisible tether or not.

He ran.

Ran over to the man.

Ran as fast as he could.

’Cause he had to get to him.

He had to get to him before he pulled that trigger.
